In a paper recently published in Paleoceanography, Raphaël Morard (University of Bremen, Germany) and coauthors showed that two cryptic species of planktonic foraminifera Globorotalia inflata can be identified in the fossil record. Subtle morphological differences associated to markedly distinct ecological preferences prompted the interest of the researchers in G. inflata. After developing a method to detect the cryptic species in core top samples, the authors applied the same approach to three downcore records, with extremely valuable results.
