RV Meteor cruise M125 (by MSc. Nancy Taniguchi)

Between March 21 and April 15, 28 scientists (including two representatives of the Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology Laboratory – P2L) with different expertise and experiences composed the scientific staff on board RV Meteor. During the first days, everybody was very excited about being at the sea and ready to start working. The work started with great excitement and gradually all teams reached their peak performance. At the end, after 26 days of hard work, we were proud of ourselves, we have done a good job.

The cruise was a success and a lot of material was collected – sediment and water – from different regions of the Brazilian continental margin. One of the most impressive moments occurred off the mouth of the Doce River. There, we were able to see the brown plume delivered by the Doce River even five months after the accident in Minas Gerais state.

During the cruise, I was a member of the biostratigraphy team. Our task was to identify interglacial and glacial periods in long sediment cores based on planktonic foraminiferal species. Also, I had the opportunity to work with XRF analyses. The expedition was a great experience and all activities contributed to improving my oceanographic and social skills.
